How to prepare for a lifestyle newborn session.

Lifestyle newborn photo sessions are all about capturing your new baby in the comfort of your home or a natural light studio setting, in a more candid style. It’s less about perfectly posed shots and more about real moments, connections, and the cozy, intimate vibe of those early days. Here are some tips to help you prepare for your newborn session:

Location

Whether you choose home or a natural light studio setting a relaxed, comfortable space is best. If that’s at home, you’ll want a tidy area with a nice window for natural light. This could be a living room, a bedroom or the nursery. Yes, an entire session can happen in one room of your home depending on the best light source! The space should be tidy and free of clutter but throws and pillows are ok for a lived-in feel. If you have sentimental items - heirloom blankets or baby’s first toys - keep them handy so they can be included in some of the images.

If you prefer not to tidy (who wants to clean with a newborn?!) a natural light studio is a great option. In Toronto, we have some beautifully staged loft type spaces which can serve as a the perfect backdrop for your session.

What to Wear

When deciding what to wear keep it simple. Choose relaxed and comfortable clothes for everyone. Neutral colours work best as they won’t distract from the connection between you and your baby and they work in any environment. Coordinating outfits for the family can create a cohesive look - think complimenting not matching. For baby, a simple swaddle, onesie, or even a cozy blanket can make for beautiful shots. You’ll want to avoid big patterns. Little hats or little booties can add a sweet touch for a few photos but it’s best to avoid anything too fussy or uncomfortable.

Plan for drool and spit ups! It’s best not to dress your babe until just before the shoot or if you do, keep a bib on until we’re ready to start. A back up outfit is a must for messes that can’t be easily cleaned.

Posing

This type of session focuses on the connection between family members. Think cuddles, soft touches, laughter, and those quiet moments when you’re bonding with your baby or the sweet interactions with older siblings. These candid, everyday moments often make for the best photos. While these moments are supposed to look spontaneous and organic, your photographer will prompt you and the family to get you into the position for magic.

Other notes

It’s easier said than done but try to stay flexible and go with the flow. Managing a new baby and older siblings (and your partner!) at a photo session can feel like a lot - because it is. But, I promise we will get there and have gorgeous photos to show for it.
