Maternity photos are an act of self care.

Pregnancy is a time of anticipation, excitement, and often a whirlwind of emotions. It’s also a period of incredible transformation—physically, emotionally, and mentally. Celebrating your body during this magical and temporary time is one of the best gifts you can give yourself.

I had both of my kids before I became a photographer and honestly, it never crossed my mind to do maternity photos. I was busy like so many other women - working and planning and morning sickness - that I never really considered it. And to this day, I regret it. I regret not having images celebrating what my body was doing. I have plenty of mirror selfies but they just don’t hit the same. I regret not having something to look back and remember how I had to lean into a process that was bigger than me and trust what my body was doing. Maternity photos allow you to freeze this moment in time. When you look back at these photos, you'll be able to relive the joy, the emotions, and the excitement you felt while waiting for your baby to arrive.

I think there is a feeling that maternity photos are bigger or fussier than other photo sessions because your body is so different. Or it seems like more of an extravagance because it’s really mostly about you. But maternity photos can be a really serene experience with plenty of opportunity for self expression and self love. Every pregnancy is different, and your maternity photos reflect your own unique experience. Whether you choose to go with a classic studio shoot, an outdoor session, or something more personal in your own home, these photos give you the chance to tell your story. Including elements that are special to you, a family heirloom, or baby’s nursery, older siblings and pets is a great way to do that.
